Your Māori Electoral Option letter

If you're Māori and you're enrolled to vote, we'll send you letters, emails and texts about the choice between the Māori roll and the general roll.

In April 2026 we sent letters about the choice to all Māori voters on both the Māori roll and the general roll.

In June and July 2026, we’re sending reminders by email and text message to all Māori voters who have given us their email address or mobile number.

It’s an important choice. The roll you choose affects who you can vote for to represent you and your rohe in Parliament.

The 2026 General Election

The 2026 General Election will be held on Saturday 7 November. If you want to change the roll you’re on for the election, you need to do it by midnight, Thursday 6 August.

You can’t change rolls in the 3 months before the election.

If you're happy with the roll you're on, you don't need to do anything - your roll type won't change unless you tell us to change it.

If you want to change your roll, you can do it online, or by completing and returning the form we sent you.

Changing your roll

You can change your roll or update your enrolment details online:

Didn’t get a letter?

If you’re Māori and you didn’t get a letter about the Māori Electoral Option, you either need to enrol to vote, or you need to check and update your enrolment address.

If you do this by Sunday 4 October, we’ll send you an EasyVote card which will make voting faster and easier. If we have your email address, we will send your EasyVote card by email.

Reminder emails and texts

If you gave us your email address or mobile number when you enrolled or updated your details, we’ll send you a reminder by email or text about the 6 August deadline to change rolls.

The dates when we are sending emails and texts are 29 June, 6 to 19 July, and 21 to 24 July.

A notice will be posted on our media and news page when emails and texts are sent.
