N13054 Mr Christopher Johanson Objection Boundary

Objection

Mr Christopher Johanson

the street we live in connects in a safe straight path to Mt Eden retail and the community offerings in that area. The advantage is that the connecting streets are quite residential so it has meant safe travel for young and old walking and bicycles. This was important as a young family with children as we have been in the same house for over 20 years. The children had tuition classes for education and music all being in Mt Eden area.
Now as an older couple in our 60s we walk from our house to the Mt Eden area for friends and the retail at Mt Eden village.
So we naturally call Mt Eden and Epsom our home, so we consider this is also an important alignment to our view points in how this area develops and its offering to the community. We consider that the political boundaries as they currently are mean that we can vote within our neighbourhood.
the proposed boundary change will disenfranchise us from our natural neighbourhood which take away our voice from the community. The proposed boundary infers we are shopping and within communities which are across busy main roads and without easy access to them there never will be an opportunity for us to easily socialise and shop in the proposed new boundary. These would always be foreign.
The proposed boundary changes make no sense as there is no natural connection. They are actually disruptive for the community that you would break apart.

Suggested solution

No boundary change for [street name].
Leave existing boundary for Epsom as it is

Mt Albert: I strongly object to the boundary of this part of Mt Eden being changed from Epsom electorate to be in the Mt Albert Electorate. This is completely a Mt Eden/Epsom community in terms of day to day life accessability- schooling, shopping, community activities, work, friends and neighbourhood values and aspirations. We are not aligned with Mt Albert community at all. This is not in the best interests of our community. It makes more sense to stay in the Epsom electorate with which we are engaged.

Suggested solution

Keep status quo. Representation is of a community not of a certain number of people.

Changing of boundary Epsom/Mount Albert

Suggested solution

Keep the boundary as it is. Epsom is our electorate. Our life and historic connection is with Epsom.where we connect with our schools our home. Schools are so important to all the families way of life and connections. It is our little community. why disrupt this and cause mental anguish? We are not just a line on a map where someone just comes and erases it.

The area i live in (Balmoral area of Mt Eden) has been under the Epsom Electorate. I oppose the change in boundary which means we will be newly allocated to the Mount-Albert electorate. I identify more with the Epsom electorate in terms of education, shopping, amenities and community activities. My children will be attending secondary school in Epsom, not Mt Albert.

Suggested solution

To keep Balmoral area of Mt Eden with the current Epsom Electorate.
Our local MP David Seymour is also of this view that this boundary should not change. I support this.

Since purchasing my home and moving into the area in 1999 we have identified stongly with Mt Eden/Epsom - one of the reasons we purchased in this area was because we wanted to be in this electorate. To change this would have a direct impact on us as a family and what we identify with.
We are active members of the Mt Eden / Epsom community and all of our community activities are connected to this community, moving us into the Mt Albert electorate would separate us from our community and place us in a community who we do not identify with or look to for any of our day to day live.
Our original intent for being in this area was to be part of the Epsom Girls Grammar zone which is important to us and it is critical that we are intrinsically linked by school zone and electorate to ensure that these two remain cohesive and connected is essential to us.
It makes no sense at all to move this boundary to Mt Albert and we object wholeheartedly to the move.

Suggested solution

Do not move the boundary for our home ([street address]) into Mt Albert, it makes no sense and would divide our community.

Moving the boundary of the Epsom electorate would move us into the Mt Albert electorate which would divide us from our community.
All of our daily life activities revolve around the Mt Eden / Epsom community and moving this boundary makes no sense for us as we do not identify with the Mt Albert community or look to this area for our daily life.
We purchased our first home in the area in 1999 and moved into this area because we wanted to be part of the Mt Eden / Epsom community and we have moved from our original home to another in the area since first joining the community in 1999. Moving the boundary makes no sense to us and it will mean that we are disconnected from the community we chose to join and pushed into an area that we do not have any connection with.
We also moved to the area because we wanted to be part of the Epsom Girls Grammar community and zone, moving us into Mt Albert would be splitting us away from the EGGS zone which also makes no sense as there would no longer be alignment between school zone and electorate.

We are firmly and resolutely against this action. The "Representative Committee" organization intends to assign us to the Mount Albert electoral district in order to ensure that each council member represents approximately the same number of people. This is an unreasonable and irrational act, and we firmly oppose this action.

We have been living in this community for ten years. Safety and reliability are our top priorities, and the community is managed in an orderly manner. I am deeply attached to every plant and tree here, and I have a warm sense of belonging.

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to formally express my strong opposition to the proposal to include a portion of the Mt Eden area within the Mt Albert electorate. While I understand the necessity of periodically reviewing and adjusting electorate boundaries, I believe this particular change would have significant and detrimental consequences for our community.

My primary concern relates to the impact on school zones. Many families in the Mt Eden area, including my own, have made long-term decisions and investments based on the existing school zoning. These boundaries are a critical factor in determining where to live, and they play a significant role in shaping the day-to-day lives of families. Altering the electorate boundaries in this manner would not only create considerable uncertainty but also disrupt established arrangements and place unnecessary strain on affected households.

Specifically, the proposed boundary adjustment could:

Force children to change schools;

Negatively affect property values; and

Disrupt long-standing community connections.

These disruptions would impact not only individual families but also the cohesion and stability of the broader community, which relies on consistency in local schooling and representation.

Beyond the issue of school zoning, I am equally concerned about the broader implications for our community's identity and political representation. Mt Eden has a distinct character and set of local priorities that are best served within its current electorate. The proposed change would risk diluting the voices of Mt Eden residents and undermine effective advocacy on the issues that matter most to our community.

I respectfully urge you to reconsider this boundary change and to give full weight to the serious consequences it would have for Mt Eden residents. Preserving the current electorate boundaries is essential for protecting both the interests of our community and the stability of our local schools.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,
Abby

Suggested solution

I strongly urge you to explore alternative boundary adjustments in neighboring areas where the impact on school zones and community stability would be minimal. Shifting the Mt Eden boundary will cause significant disruption for families and the community, which is unnecessary and avoidable.

If a boundary change in Mt Eden is absolutely required, I ask that non-residential or less community-sensitive areas be considered instead, so that families are not forced to face changes in school placement, property value loss, and broken community ties.

This would allow the boundary review to meet its goals without placing an unfair burden on Mt Eden residents.

I am writing to strongly object to moving my street and the surrounding neighbourhood for Epsom to Mount Albert.
It makes no sense to reduce Epsom’s size when your report the NZ Electorate Boundary Review, states that the Epsom Electoral population is dropping (3.7% below quota).
Also, I and my family have no connection to Mount Albert. I don’t go there, visit there, and couldn’t tell you who the politicians are in that area. Whereas I visit Mt Eden, Newmarket, and there surrounding suburbs. This is where my day-to-day life is, and my children have attended school in this area. There friends are in the Epsom Mt Eden area.
I understand my Epsom electorate and care about the outcomes that occur within it.
However, I have no interest or understanding of Mount Albert. Is it the aim to disenfranchise and create even more disillusioned in the political landscape. I would have thought your role is to encourage people to participate in the electrical process.
If this change occurred, it is highly likely I won’t even bother to vote again. Several neighbours have also expressed this view.
I also believe this will divide the students attending Epsom Girls Grammar Schools Zone. With education lacking in Aotearoa why would you do that?
A connected community is a strong community. Why would you look to weaken or destroy a community.
So, I would strongly request that the Dominion Rd to Balmoral community remain within the Epsom electorate.

Suggested solution

Don’t make my neighbourhood change.
As Mt Roskill is close to the quota, I suggest you include the area Mairoro Rd to Tiverton Road into Mount Albert.
It appears of a similar size and is closer and likely more connected to Mount Albert. Surely that is a better solution.
Also, the option of retaining some of the expanding Auckland Central in Mount Albert is an option given there above quota numbers, per your report.
I would also suggest that with population growth increasing more rabidly out west, surely expanding that way is a long-term better option.

I firmly oppose this behavior. My family and I have taken root in this community for many years, and there are traces of our life everywhere here. Overall I am pleased with the changes to Epsom, however the area in the southwest that would move to Mt Albert should remain in Epsom

• These residents look to Mount Eden, not Mount Albert, for their day-to-day life – shopping, amenities and leisure.
• Residents in the Epsom electorate care deeply about education. This change would split the Epsom Girls’ Grammar School zone – which closely mirrors the electorate boundaries – between Epsom and Mount Albert, dividing this strong community of interest

I strongly object to to the rezoning of the area north of Balmoral Rd from Epsom to Mt Albert.
As a resident of Mt Eden and [street name] for many years, my neighbours and I very much identify with Mt Eden for everything we do - shopping, amenities, meeting friends and community life.
The centre of Mt Albert is a significant distance from the Mt Eden community in this area and separated by a number of arterial roads. People in this area simply have no connection whatsoever with Mt Albert
It makes absolutely no sense to break it up in this way. Whatsmore, the catchment areas for the local schools end up being split up as well.
